Analysis of pipe and duct networks. Pressure transients in pipes.Turbomachinery: water turbines and pumps, cavitation, pump selection fan and compressors. Potential flow. Boundary layer theory: laminar and turbulent boundary layers, separation, methods for calculating boundary layers. Flow over immersed bodies: drag, lift, aerofoils, flow induced vibration and aircraft performance. Compressible flows: gas dynamics, transonic and supersonic flows, nozzles and ducts. Measurement techniques. Computational fluid dynamics. Applications of fluid flow in industrial and emerging technologies.
Learning Outcomes
- to develop skills in communicating results and its application to fellow engineers;
- to develop the students understanding of advanced fluid mechanics concepts and theory;
- to exercise the students skill in identifying and applying appropriate methods to solve fluid flow problems analytically or numerically;
- to read the fluid mechanics literature and communicate the developments to a critical audience.
