"If you are thoroughly conversant with strategy, you will recognise the enemy's intentions and thus have many opportunities to win" - Miyamoto Musashi, The Book of Five Rings. As part of the JCU MBA program, Competitive Strategy deals with the role of the CEO and his or her immediate subordinates in the creation of strategic architecture and the inculcation of strategic intent in the organisation. As such, this subject has a very "real world" flavour. Strategy is a core function of the senior executive group. As such, the literature on strategy is rich and varied. In fact, it can be argued that Sun Tzu's classic treatise The Art of War (circa 500 BC) was the first business management text. Gary Hamel and C.K. Prahalad have emerged as the latest strategy gurus, and as such, their modern classic, Competing for the Future is the core of the subject. Students will be introduced to the so-called "Harvard" case-study with some modifications. The traditional Harvard method emphasises analytical skills, this subject goes beyond that position to achieve synthetic thinking.
