This subject develops skills in science communication both for journalists who are looking to write on scientific research and related issues, and for science graduates looking to communicate with a general audience. The subject addresses the historical development of lay literature, popular media and the internet concerning science and technology, with special emphasis on the problems encountered by scientists and journalists in representing the work of scientists to general audiences, and in dealing with complex moral and ethical issues.
Learning Outcomes
- an understanding of the history, nature and methods of science and scientists;
- a critical awareness of the importance of science journalism in the contemporary media;
- a good understanding of journalistic research and writing techniques appropriate to science writing;
- a network of contacts within science and within science journalism.
