An introduction to the social structures and ideologies of Tokugawa Japan (1600-1868). The subject looks at the disparate cultures of the rulers and the ruled in the period, including the culture of the latter as it was expressed in the performing arts, woodblock printing, the amusement quarters and the role of the geisha.
Learning Outcomes
- to acquire a basic understanding of the Edo period from which contemporary Japan emerged;
- to develop an appreciation of the origins and developments of Japanese work ethics and pre- industrial aesthetics;
- to develop basic skills in evaluating the processing information about different ideologies and cultures.
