A general introduction to the ways in which Japan modernised. The collapse of feudalism and traditional customs will be studied together with the new ideologies and social structures that replaced the old order. The focus will be on the ways in which this transformation of the political climate changed the lives of the Japanese people and their social expectations. The effects of Westernisation on the traditional arts will be studied as well.
Learning Outcomes
- to develop basic skills in a comparative understanding of culture;
- to acquire a general understanding of post- feudal Japanese society;
- to develop an appreciation of the tension experienced when a traditional society is overcome by a dominant and overwhelming culture and how the Japanese dealt with this challenge.
