Available to Bachelor of Indigenous Studies students and other undergraduate students.
This subject explores Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their roles within family and community. Students will be introduced to issues and notions through online learning including the discussion board and e-mail, digital medium and reading materials. Therefore it is essential that students have access to the World Wide Web to complete this subject, students who do not have access to e-mail should notify the subject coordinator. The subject will examine some of the social determinants in relation to social and cultural capital, leadership, capacity building and health. The concepts of family and community wellbeing, qualities of life and self determination will be discussed along with the underlying assumptions developed by service providers in assessing the needs of Indigenous communities.
Learning Outcomes
- recognize the unique nature of family and community wellbeing from an Aboriginal perspective;
- recognize the unique nature of family and community wellbeing from a Torres Strait Islander perspective;
- discuss leadership within an Indigenous context;
- describe the relationships between Indigenous communities and government;
- critically analyze how community development processes are applied in Indigenous organizations.
