In this subject students will engage with a number of Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders in a variety of settings in order to develop a greater knowledge and understanding of their world views and cultures. Students will be introduced to issues and notions through online learning including the discussion board and e-mail, digital medium and reading materials. Therefore it is essential that students have access to the World Wide Web to complete this subject, students who do not have access to e-mail should notify the subject coordinator. The information provided by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people teaching this subject will enhance the student's capacity to analyse issues from a different cultural perspective within the context of lifestyle pre contact with European people, initial contact and post-contact time frames. It is intended that the focus of this subject will be determined by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people providing the teaching activities in the various locations. This will not only reflect the diversity of the people but will also enable students to gain valuable insights into the dynamic nature of the different cultures. Students will be challenged to consider the social construction of the learning environment and the power dynamics attached to the way they are positioned within society.

Learning Outcomes

• develop insights into the processes of Indigenous epistemological and ontological perspectives;
• examine their own world views and cultural values and beliefs and examine these from an Indigenous perspective;
• describe the historical, political, social and cultural frameworks of identified Indigenous communities;
• analyse their knowledge and understanding of the knowledge and issues which are considered important by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and compare these with their own perceptions;
• critically review their own assumptions within the context of the versions of reality to which they have been exposed during this learning experience.
