Available ONLY to students enrolled in Bachelor of Nursing Science and Bachelor of Nursing Science (Post RN).
An introduction to Indigenous health and exploration of key issues including: colonisation and the eras of settlement policy; social determinants of health and health inequalities; health status, mortality and morbidity patterns; health services, workforce and policy; cultural perspectives, beliefs and communication; and political issues (ie social justice, native title, cultural heritage, governance etc).
Learning Outcomes
- acquire an appreciation of the diversity of cultures of Indigenous peoples and demonstrate an awareness of the skills and practices which would contribute to effective communication and interaction in the health care environment;
- apply key elements of indigenous health to the nursing context, focussing particularly upon the varied interactions between nurses and the Indigenous peoples with whom they plan, and to whom they deliver, nursing care;
- demonstrate an awareness of health conditions affecting Indigenous people, the factors that contribute to them and strategies which exist to address these conditions;
- understand the current health status and social conditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and be aware of comparisons with the health of other international Indigenous populations;
- understand the links between the colonial process and health inequalities and the major historical eras of Indigenous and colonial relations and the political environment which exists around Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples health.
