This subject examines the history of interactions between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians, from earliest contacts through to the present day. Key issues include: conflict and dispossession; indigenous adaptations and accommodations to the European presence; changing government policies toward indigenous peoples; and the role of racial ideas. These issues are examined in the context of debates over the history of race relations in Australia.
Learning Outcomes
- to acquire an understanding of the major themes in the history of relations between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians;
- to gain an appreciation of the changing social, cultural and political contexts within which relations between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians have developed;
- to acquire competence in assessing a range of interpretations of the history of Australian race relations;
- to become familiar with a diversity of historiographical approaches to the study of race relations;
- to develop high-level skills of historical research, analysis and writing.
