This subject introduces students to the hardware, software and production processes used in the contemporary design studio and in the digital production environment. Students learn the fundamentals of how computers work, examine Macintosh and Windows based operating systems and learn how to manage and structure their work. Students are introduced to file formats, data rate calculations and general principles of cross platform workflow in current industry use. Troubleshooting, problem solving, system management issues, file transfer, internet use and basic principles of colour management are also covered. Students learn how to access current design and production related information and resources using a variety of communications media.
Learning Outcomes
- ability to access a broad range of information and resources related to design and communications based computing activities;
- ability to produce text, graphics and images using several key industry standard programs and save these in appropriate formats for further use;
- achieve a suitable level of technical proficiency in operating, maintaining and troubleshooting personal computer systems;
- awareness of the rate of technological change and development of capacities to respond in an appropriate manner;
- familiarity with Macintosh and Windows operating systems;
- familiarity with a range of hardware and software used in the design studio and in the production of print and screen ready artwork.
