Subject available as part of a Foundation Program for international students seeking alternative entry to a university course.
This module is designed to provide students with basic mathematical knowledge and skills at the secondary level. The subject is designed for students with a very basic level of secondary mathematics. They will gain knowledge and skills in basic arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, analytical geometry, and coordinate geometry.
Learning Outcomes
- revise and enhance elementary skills from junior secondary school mathematics including mathematical operations on whole numbers, fractions and decimals;
- complete simple modelling exercises in science and engineering, with ancillary computer software to assist calculation and understanding;
- understand basic algebra including factorization, substitution and transposition of both linear & non-linear equations;
- understand basic ratios, rates, and variation and basic trigonometry;
- understand basic geometry, functions and graphs, linear relations and functions, basic curve sketching and polar coordinates; simple coordinate geometry.
Graduate Qualities
- The acquisition of coherent and disciplined sets of skills, knowledge, values and professional ethics from at least one discipline area;
- The ability to generate, calculate, interpret and communicate numerical information in ways appropriate to a given discipline or discourse;
- The ability to select and use appropriate tools and technologies.
