This block-mode subject addresses the literature of war and conflict throughout the twentieth century, from the first world war to Vietnam. Classes begin with a study of <i>The Iliad</i>, which provides a background and a basis for a study of modern experiences of conflict. The subject addresses its key themes from various points of view: European, American and Australian; male and female; participant and observer; regular soldier, conscript and victim.
Learning Outcomes
- a full and close understanding of the set texts;
- high-level critical and analytical skills, particularly with regard to the relations between literature and history;
- an understanding of the relations between cultural forms and artistic expression and the experience of social, cultural and personal trauma.
