Students are introduced to a range of contemporary postcolonial texts addressing Caribbean, African and Asian encounters with Western colonialism. The subject's focus on three key central concerns in postcolonial studies is framed by a broader understanding of the key issues and debates in the field, relating them to colonial and postcolonial historical contexts.

Learning Outcomes

• an awareness of issues of cultural difference and cultural identity, politics, history and aesthetics, and to examine the contested spaces of colonial and postcolonial inscription;
• a sound command of some of the most influential critical practices in the field, and familiarity with the work of postcolonial critics working at the intersection with cultural and feminist studies;
• a detailed knowledge of the set texts.
