Topics include: Introduction to non linear continuum mechanics: categories of non linear analysis, alternative strain and stress methods, simply non linear truss analysis, the Newton-Raphson solution for a simple 1 DOF truss and linearization. Deformation and strain: material and spatial descriptions of motion, Lagrangian and Eulerian coordinate systems, deformation gradient and strain tensors, linear strain and linear spin, volicity gradient, rate of deformation, spin tensor and rates of strain, natural strain, and volume and area relations. Stress and non linear equilibrium equations: Cauchy stress tensor, Eulerian equilibrium and virtual velocity equations, work conjugacy, transformed equilibrium and virtual velocity equation, and the various forms of Kirchhoff and Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensors. Hyperelasticity: the elasticity tensor and isotropic elasticity. Linearized equilibrium equations: the Newton-Raphson solution, linearized Eulerian equilibrium equation, equilibrium and total potential energy. Discretization and solution of equilibrium equations: kinematics, equilibrium, linearized equilibrium and the Newton-Raphson iterative solution.
