Topics include: An introduction to finite element theory. 1D models: weighted residuals, FE weighted residuals, variational methods, FE variational methods and shape functions. 2D models: quasi-harmonic problems, quasi-harmonic FE problems, solid mechanics problems, solid mechanics FE problems and shape functions. 3D models: shape functions. Isoparametric concepts and numerical integration. An introduction to FE codes. An introduction to benchmarks in FE.
Learning Outcomes
- To introduce the fundamental concepts of the finite element method with applications to engineering problems;
- To supplement fundamental concepts with the use of a finite element code and verify the coded results gainst benchmarks.
Graduate Qualities
- The ability to define and to solve problems in at least one discipline area;
- The ability to calculate, produce, interpret and communicate numerical information;
- The ability to select and use appropriate IT tools;
- The ability to use a variety of media and methods to retrieve, analyse, evaluate, organise and present information;
- The ability to learn independently and in a self-directed manner.
