Vector mechanics. Particle and rigid body statics. Plane section properties, centroids and second moments of area. Equilibrium of a body in two- and three-dimensions. Analysis of simple trusses and frames. Introduction to distributive loads. Analysis of internal forces axial load, shear force and bending moment. Development of shear force and bending moment diagrams.
Learning Outcomes
- develop and practise strategies and tactics for problem identification, formulation and solution;
- develop effective engineering communication by (a) learning effective problem layout; (b) practising the use of tools such as word processor, equation editor and spreadsheet and (c) learning clear and concise report writing skills;
- form study and problem solving teams for the development and practice of teamwork and leadership skills;
- learn and implement the basic engineering fundamentals in the calculation of forces and reactions in engineering statics for two- and three-dimensional bodies.
