Vector field theory, Maxwells equations, Boundary conditions and the Poynting vector. Time-harmonic solutions of the wave equation. Plane wave propagation in materials and at boundaries. Skin effect. Wave guides. Electromagnetic radiation from a dipole antenna. Antenna parameters; radiation pattern, beam width, radiation resistance, gain. Antenna arrays. Electromagnetic wave propagation around the earth, multipath propagation and channel capacity limitations. Mobile radio cell planning. Satellite communication systems, radar, satellite and terrestrial microwave link planning. Fibre optics, radar systems.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate a knowledge of propagation and communication systems for RF and microwave applications;
- specify and design the requirements for mobile radio and fibre optic microwave link systems;
- understand the basic components of electro-magnetic radiation, antenna analysis and antenna parameters. Be aware of various common antenna types;
- become sufficiently competent in the manipulation of the fundamental laws governing electromagnetic fields and waves to formulate solutions to common engineering applications in transmission lines, waveguides, fibre optic cables and antennas.
