This subject provides a general introduction to English education in the secondary school, focussing particularly on Years 8-10. Topics include: English education syllabus development; the theoretical language basis from which current English syllabus documents in Queensland have been constructed; the concept of genre and genre theory central to this syllabus; lesson and unit planning in Years 8-10 English; pedagogies of reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing as they apply to the English classroom; and to issues of literacy, disadvantage and student diversity.
