Education is viewed through a lens of cultural diversity, with a specific focus on "race", gender, socio-economic status and location. In the context of social justice and reconciliation, students will be introduced to theoretical, practical and personal themes relating to the construction of identities, historical legacies, multicultural persons, classrooms and societies and culturally inclusive classroom practices. Students will use their understandings of these themes to develop competencies needed to make decisions about learning in classrooms and communities in culturally diverse societies. Given the ongoing educational disadvanatge experienced by Indigenious people within Australian society, Indigenious education will provide the main focus for the study of these themes.
Learning Outcomes
- describe how their own social position has shaped their personal and educational experiences and will shape their role as future educators;
- participate in ways that are inclusive and equitable for all learning partners in this subject, in accordance with non-sexist and anti- racist policies;
- analyse and apply best available educational theory, research and practice in education for cultural diversity and specifically in Indigenous education;
- critically apply understandings of culturally inclusive curriculum and pedagogy to classroom practices in specific settings;
- critically reflect on the understandings and skills they need to work productively and equitably with students, families and colleagues of diverse cultural background, with particular attention to the needs of Indigenous communities.
