This subject has been designed to equip preservice teachers with the necessary knowledge and competencies to effectively and equitably teach mathematics to young children (K-3).
Learning Outcomes
- construct and articulate a personal philosophy regarding the teaching and learning of mathematics in the new millennium;
- demonstrate an understanding of the learning processes used by young children of different socio-cultural backgrounds in learning mathematics;
- evaluate various teaching methods, materials and media as they relate to young childrens learning, especially in pre-number and early number programs;
- explore ways of organising the learning environment to ensure effective learning and teaching;
- demonstrate an awareness of the content and characteristics of developmentally appropriate and socially just mathematics curricula for young learners.
