This subject examines Earth's surficial materials in the context of current processes, past patterns and future global change. Topics include natural hazards such as volcanoes and earthquakes within the framework of Earth dynamics, the endowment, utilisation and sustainable use of Earth's soil, water, mineral and energy resources; processes related to landscape materials including weathering, soil formation, groundwater movement and sediment transport, deposition and accumulation. Global cycling of Earth materials inclusive of change due to natural cycles and the influence of humankind.

Learning Outcomes

• to equip students with the ability to recognise common regolith and sedimentary materials and appreciate the processes by which they formed;
• to provide students with a foundation knowledge to support advanced-level study in Earth Sciences;
• to provide students with an objective analysis of current environmental issues from an Earth System Science perspectives;
• to provide students with an overview of how the Earth functions as a dynamically interactive system.
