This subject will introduce students to business planning, marketing, financial management and the statutory requirements necessary to successfully operate a small business in the creative arts industries. Topics to be covered include: researching and developing a business plan; budgeting; pricing; copyright; contracts; taxation requirements; employing staff and models; banking and finance; marketing and promotion; grant writing; basic bookkeeping and insurance requirements/obligations.
Learning Outcomes
- understand the role of a small business manager with particular reference to managerial, legal, contract, staffing and statutory obligations;
- acquire a knowledge of financial matters in the arts industry and display an understanding of budgeting, business planning and grant writing;
- acquire the knowledge to be able to develop an understanding of the costs of running a business to allow production of price lists and quotations for projects;
- gain an understanding of marketing and promoting a small business or individual artist/performer within the creative arts industries.
