This subject introduces students to a range of academic disciplines in the university with specific reference to issues affecting Indigenous Australians. The subject focuses on strategies for empowerment and provides a broad overview of contemporary issues experienced by Indigenous Australians, including: Native Title, resource management, social statistics and cycles, racism and the media, Indigenous media, reconciliation and treaty.
Learning Outcomes
- Critically analyse teaching and research derived from academic disciplines, and information written about Indigenous people of Australia;
- Examine contemporary issues experienced by Indigenous Australians;
- Critically examine the social, political and cultural forms of power that confront, and are harnessed by Indigenous Australians;
- Compare Australian Indigenous experiences with those of Indigenous groups in other countries.
