This subject introduces students to language where texts are examined for how they are used, by whom and for what purpose. The theory and practice of language use is also introduced, emphasising how spoken and written texts, work in a range of social, cultural and community contexts. The use of language in academic, filmic and scientific texts; literature; and popular media will be explored. Students will examine texts and develop techniques of analytical and critical reading, and look at the development of logic in the argument as discourse and how these relate to various texts.
