This is the Doctor of Astronomy Research Thesis which extends over many semesters for both P/T and F/T students. It is therefore available for both semesters.

This subject is the Doctor of Astronomy Research Thesis. Here students will carry out original research at the doctorate level under the supervision of staff from (or associated with) the University. The results of the research will be presented in a bound Doctoral Thesis for external examination.

Learning Outcomes

• Students are introduced to the way in which the Universe is studied at an advanced level;
• Students are immersed in the reporting/publishing skills of science;
• Students are introduced to advanced measurement techniques through the published work of other scientists;
• Students are told of the limitations in experimental work, and the sources of error that are present, and how error is eliminated in experimental work;
• Students learn the vocabulary of science and the thinking processes of scientists, and learn appropriate written and verbal presentation skills.

Graduate Qualities

• The ability to think critically, to analyse and evaluate claims, evidence and arguments;
• The ability to adapt knowledge to new situations;
• The ability to define and to solve problems in at least one discipline area;
• The ability to calculate, produce, interpret and communicate numerical information;
