This subject is a literature research project in the Doctor of Astronomy degree. It is the first of the true research subjects. Students will become familiar with the primary astronomical literature (journals, books and other archives) much of which is abstracted and available on-line on the Internet. Topics will be on observational astronomy and astrophysics, astronomy education or quantitative astronomy history. This is to prepare students for their own original research project.

Learning Outcomes

• immersion in the reporting/publishing skills of science;
• introduction to advanced measurement techniques through the published work of other scientists;
• introduction to the way in which the Universe is studied at an advanced level;
• learn of the limitations in experimental work, and the sources of error that are present, and how error is eliminated in experimental work;
• learn the vocabulary of science and the think processes of scientists;
• learn written and verbal presentation skills.
