This subject provides a broad overview of major theoretical approaches in social and cultural anthropology and establishes the foundation for higher studies in the discipline. The relationship between anthropology and such intellectual currents as modernism and post-modernism, structuralism and post-structuralism, feminist and postcolonial theory are examined from the perspective of a history of key debates. The subject also involves the close reading of significant ethnographic works by anthropologists in both the past and the present.
Learning Outcomes
- be able to evaluate and participate in key intellectual debates recurrent within the discipline;
- be critically aware of the different anthropological perspectives that are brought to bear on the interpretation of social and cultural life;
- have an in-depth knowledge of at least two key ethnographies;
- possess a broad understanding of the major theoretical concepts informing anthropological inquiry.
