This subject focuses on direct practice with children and families while examining models of alternative care and the needs of carers. It equips students with the skills in working with children as well as managing relationships among the different stakeholders who have an interest in children's welfare, including parents, carers, statutory bodies and non-governemnt agencies. The subject will comprise four modules: working with children and young people; models of out of home care; working with parents and caregivers; and training and support for caregivers . The subject is both knowledge and skill-based, wtih a particular emphasis on working with children.

Learning Outcomes

• demonstrate a familiarity with, and be able to apply approaches to, direct practice with children and families;
• demonstrate a familiarity with, and be able to apply models of alternative care in working with children and other stakeholders;
• develop skills in working with children in a child centred way;
• design, deliver and evaluate training and support programs for caregivers.
