This subject introduces the principles and practices for ethical youth work. It provides students with a knowledge of the many issues facing young people today including homelessness, legal issues and rights, mental health, physical health, sexual health, substance use, violence and crime, precarious employment and marginalised young people. It will examine worker roles, responsibilities, ethical practice in responding to young people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate knowledge of the many issues that youth workers face in working with alienated young people;
- demonstrate a knowledge of the choices and dilemmas facing young people today;
- demonstrate an understanding of the many aspects of youth in contemporary society;
- demonstrate knowledge of issues of ethical practices, boundaries and confidentiality in working with young people;
- identify and have an understanding of adolescent development and youth culture and identity.
