Available to students in the Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy programs and for students in other courses with the permission of the Head of School.
This subject enables students to develop basic emergency, personal and professional skills in preparation for fieldwork and early contact with clients and health professionals. It includes gaining competency in some basic clinical skills related to health issues of clients. The subject examines issues related to privacy, safety and to codes of behaviour and ethical conduct. Health and social issues commonly encountered in the workplace are examined. Students will be required to complete a certified Senior First Aid Certificate.
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate awareness of professional identity and professionalism;
- Identify areas of personal safety, methods of managing a crisis and stress management when working in the health environment;
- Describe issues of confidentiality that may arise and the means of dealing with these;
- Demonstrate basic clinical observations and their interpretations;
- Describe cultural issues; examine own attitudes and ways of becoming an effective practitioner in a cross-cultural setting; outline orientation to communities, their resources, identifying issues and services.
