This subject provides students with an opportunity both to deepen their understanding of theoretical issues and research methodologies in sociology and to broaden their familiarity with the social sciences. Admission is available on a full-time or part-time basis to students who have satisfied the requirements of the school regarding the standard of academic achievement necessary to proceed to the honours degree. The curriculum comprises a sociology seminar (weekly during Semester 1); a multi-disciplinary seminar (fortnightly during Semesters 1 and 2); the supervised writing of a 12,000 word thesis on a specific research project.
Learning Outcomes
- become familiar with advanced theory and methods in sociology;
- design and undertake a research project;
- develop the writing and presentation skills required to complete a thesis;
- identify and discuss current trends, issues and debates in sociology;
- understand the ethical, disciplinary and practical implications of sociological research.
