The subject is comprised of three modules. Module 1 looks at the history of developmental psychology and psychopathology. A number of issues faced by developmental psychologists are addressed. Module 2 introduces the developmental pathways involved in infancy and toddlerhood, the preschool years, school age years and adolescence. Module 3 offers the opportunity to study, in some depth, a number of areas of abnormal childhood and adolescent development. Students taking SS1106 for credit toward a higher qualification must complete it in one semester by the end of the final week of classes.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate an understanding of some of the issues affecting parents and families;
- demonstrate an understanding of some of the issues involved in cultural diversity;
- demonstrate an understanding of the issues involved in labelling and classification of mental health problems;
- demonstrate knowledge of the developmental pathways involved in: prenatal development and birth; social and personality development in infancy and toddlerhood; cognitive, social and personality development at school age; physical development, health, social and personality development in adolescence;
- demonstrate knowledge of the history and current perspectives of developmental psychology;
- recognise and have an overview of the issues involved in: foetal alcohol syndrome; down syndrome; autism; attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; adolescent eating disorders; adolescent suicide.
