Enrolment restricted to students in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology.
This subject will introduce students to models of normal and disordered oromotor function, sound production and speech and to the assessment and treatment of developmental speech disorders. These will include disordered articulation and phonological development arising from health conditions such as cleft palate and cerebral palsy, as well as that occurring in normally developing children. The field component will allow students to observe and record normal oromotor and speech function in a preschool-age child, as well as treatment of speech disorder in the clinical setting.
Learning Outcomes
- Students will demonstrate knowledge of: normal oral structure and function; normal sound development; normal speech development; disordered speech development (articulation and phonology), including that associated with cleft palate and cerebral palsy; assessment and treatment of disorders of sound production and speech;
- Students will demonstrate skills in: Observation of speech production in a normal child Observation of speech pathology practice in assessing and treating a speech impairment Examination of oro-motor function Administration of an articulation test.
