This subject will provide essential foundation knowledge in grammar, phonetics and phonology essential for future speech pathology practice. The subject will introduce students to the basic concepts of grammar, grammatical analysis and phonetic transcription. The subject will be taught in two parts: ; a grammar component and a phonetics/phonology component. Both theoretical knowledge and practical skills will be developed in both, using actual speech and language samples. This will prepare students for analysis of disordered speech and language in the future.
Learning Outcomes
- Students will be able to transcribe and analyse actual spoken and written texts;
- Students will understand the relevance of linguistic knowledge and skills for speech pathology practice;
- Students will understand basic terminology and concepts of grammar, phonology and phonetics.
