This subject builds upon the core skills provided in PY5017 to provide additional specialised training. The focus is upon specialised assessment methods, identification and discrimination of less common forms of dementia, work in chronic care and residential care facilities and dealing with health-related issues. Topics include the assessment and diagnosis of less common neurological disorders, including Parkinsons disease, frontal lobe dementia, subcortical dementias and Lewy body variant; differentiation of depression and dementia; identification and management of disruptive behaviours; issues in residential care, including interdisciplinary teams and training; caregiving, including special topics such as elder abuse; specialised assessment methods, including cognitive screening; specialised memory tests, functional tests and neuropsychological methods and advanced health promotion, particularly nutrition, exercise and successful ageing.
Learning Outcomes
- develop an appreciation of key issues in residential care;
- develop an appreciation of the major health issues for older people;
- develop skills in assessing common neurological disorders;
- provide advanced, specialised training in geropsychology;
- provide skills necessary to cope with disruptive behaviours;
- provide training in administering and assessing tests of cognitive, memory and neuropsychological functioning.
