Students completing this subject will explore photographic theory and practice in the context of three areas of professional practice: fashion, advertising and architecture. The study of fashion photography will be underpinned through an examination of its history, development and contemporary themes and issues. Students will make creative responses to fashion advertising assignments necessitating direction of models, techniques for posing, location and studio lighting, location survey, choice of props, hair and make-up, choice and use of clothing and accessories. Concepts in advertising, composition for different purposes, handling and presentation of products, creating impact and point of difference, coupled with applied techniques in studio still life photography will be explored. Students will also make an investigation of the history of architectural photography and look at concepts and issues relating to: revealing of space and form through lighting and composition, balancing lighting levels, and colour temperature for photography of architectural interiors.
