Students completing this subject will explore photographic theory and practice in the context of three areas of professional practice: fashion, advertising and architecture. The study of fashion photography will be underpinned through an examination of its history, development and contemporary themes and issues. Students will make creative responses to fashion advertising assignments necessitating direction of models, techniques for posing, location and studio lighting, location survey, choice of props, hair and make-up, choice and use of clothing and accessories. Concepts in advertising, composition for different purposes, handling and presentation of products, creating impact and point of difference, coupled with applied techniques in studio still life photography will be explored. Students will also make an investigation of the history of architectural photography and look at concepts and issues relating to: revealing of space and form through lighting and composition, balancing lighting levels, and colour temperature for photography of architectural interiors. Learning Outcomes
- To acquire a knowledge and understanding of the history and principles of fashion, architectural and advertising photography to a level that feeds new creative endeavour. 1.1 To gain a knowledge and appreciation of the conceptual drivers underpinning fashion, architectural and advertising photography. 1.2 To gain an awareness of the contribution of influential practitioners in the history of photography. 1.3 To gain an awareness of varying genres within fashion, architectural and advertising photography.;
- To gain applied photographic skills and knowledge to near professional standard in areas of fashion, architectural and advertising photography. 2.1 To be able to direct of models, to have a knowledge of techniques for posing, location survey, choice of props, hair and make-up, choice and use of clothing and accessories, the role of agencies and other professional bodies and creative contributors. 2.2 To be able to demonstrate competency to near professional standard in the use of camera and lighting equipment.;
- To be able to apply previously acquired knowledge of photographic, darkroom and/or digital techniques to new tasks and explore experimental alternatives in the quest for originality and creative excellence. 3.1 To extend understanding of allied disciplines through the digital design of advertising/magazine layouts incorporating original images;
- To produce written documents to clear and defined standards. 4.1 Assignment outcomes are to be evaluated and explained to demonstrate a clear understanding of principle and practice. 4.2 Plan, draft, revise, edit, proofread, print and present these documents to an acceptable professional standard free of spelling, grammar and other errors. 4.3 Construct formatted word-processed documentation that is appropriately informed by explicitly labelled computer generated diagrams. excellence.
