This subject explores the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills required by registered nurses when caring for patients during the perioperative stages. Content includes managing the physical and psychosocial needs for patients with complex health care problems, clinical problem-solving and an introduction to technological interventions. Also, the subject will focus specifically on preparation, surgery and care of patients requiring the following: gastrointestinal, genitourinary and musculoskeletal interventions. Competency-based clinical assessment will occur during the clinical practice component of the subject.
Learning Outcomes
- apply a problem-solving approach to plan and implement individualised holistic nursing care for perioperative patients;
- apply knowledge and skills to implement and evaluate contemporary perioperative nursing practice in relation to patient and family-centred care;
- critically assess and monitor patients during the pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative stages within the context of a technological environment who have undergone the following types of surgery: gastrointestinal, genitourinary, musculoskeletal.
