This subject focuses on current issues relevant to critical care nurses. Students will critically analyse issues relevant to their practice, such as: specialisation in nursing, competency standards, the role of the nurse in a multi-disciplinary team, evolution of the nurse practitioner in Australia, advancing technology and crisis intervention and stress management.

Learning Outcomes

• as a reflective practitioner, examine and critique ones own critical care practice;
• develop an understanding of the established competency standards for critical care nurse specialists in relation to current practice;
• evaluate the role of the nurse as a member of a multi-disciplinary team and describe the evolution of the nurse practitioner in relation to critical care;
• outline principles related to critical incident stress debriefing and stress management in critical care environments.
