This subject is designed to provide an understanding of the related applications of accounting and finance in the contemporary environment, as the critical underpinnings of global capital markets. The two fields are related through the calculation and expression of rates of return on capital. The theme of the subject will be the integration of accounting and finance in the market valuation of business organisations. Accounting topics covered will include the preparation and interpretation of the basic financial statements, contemporary valuation and reporting challenges, and the role of corporate governance. Finance topics will address essential concepts such as relations between risk and return, the efficiency of capital markets, organisational financial structures and the role of options in financial management.
Learning Outcomes
- develop an understanding of the nature of assets, liabilities and income in the context of the accounting equation, and develop an understanding and ability to prepare accounting statements such as balance sheet, income statement and cash flow statement;
- develop an understanding of the relevance of corporate governance and multi-stakeholder reporting in modern society;
- develop an ability to analyse and interpret financial statements;
- develop skills in the economic assessments of proposed capital projects;
- develop an understanding of the concepts of risk and return and how they relate to the market valuation of corporate entities.
