This is a dynamic skills based subject with the primary objective being the development of effective legal professionals who research, evaluate and apply underlying legal principles of health law. Topics include the regulation of health care in Australia; confidentiality and ownership of medical records; consent to medical treatment; professional liability; abortion; reproductive technology; surrogacy; genetics; euthanasia; living will legislation; human tissue and organ transplantation; and complaints against health care professionals.
Learning Outcomes
- To develop knowledge and understanding of the ethical and legal dimensions of Queensland's health laws; to comprehend, evaluate and synthesise such laws as against similar laws in other jurisdictions;
- To evaluate the implications of health issues for Queensland law reform, policy and practice and distinguish between 'law in the books' and 'law in action'; to contextualise health laws within the broader social, political, cultural, spiritual and economic framework of Australian society.
