In this subject students learn to adapt the principles and skills developed in prior studies to the medium of radio. Students are introduced to the daily operations of radio news rooms and to the requirements of writing for the ear. They discover the significance, and explore some of the consequences, of the mediums reliance on immediacy and the spoken word. The subject includes radio newswriting, interviewing and microphone technique and a basic introduction to documentary production, sound gathering and digital editing. Students will be encouraged where possible to gain practical experience on campus and community radio stations.
Learning Outcomes
- to develop an understanding of the role of radio journalism in the mass media;
- to learn how to write radio news and present full, balanced radio news bulletins.
