An introduction to the formative events and processes in the social and cultural history of Japan prior to 1600. Topics studied include the introduction of Buddhism and how it became a popular religion; the causes of political change exemplified in the rise of the samurai; and the downfall of the imperial court. The Noh theatre, garden customs, ink painting and other aesthetic movements are also discussed.
Learning Outcomes
- develop an appreciation of the dynamics of Japanese aestheticism;
- develop basic skills in critical analysis and understanding other cultures;
- acquire a general understanding of the socio- cultural development of Japan before 1600.
