Available to students with a Bachelor of Indigenous Studies degree or equivalent.
This subject provides the beginning researcher with the skills to define a researchable topic in an Indigenous context, to find out what has gone before (do a small literature review), to design the research project and to collect some data for analysis. (The analysis and interpretation and report writing will occur in the next subject IA4002.) For this subject the student will write two small papers: the first a literature review and the second the data collection methods used. There are five online discussions during the semester. There is also a compulsory two-day seminar at SIAS, Townsville.
Learning Outcomes
- ability to conduct a small scale research project;
- ability to deal with sensitive political issues relating to research in Indigenous communities;
- respect for Indigenous peoples expectations with regard to their conduct and behaviour in Indigenous communities;
- responsible and positive attitude towards Indigenous peoples interests and concerns;
- understanding of acceptable protocols in the respective communities being researched.
