Those students who do not have Internet access must contact the Subject Coordinator to acquire the relevant materials. This subject examines the effects of change over time on Indigenous Australians beliefs, values and equality through the introduction of a Western political regime. The association between Indigenous Australians and the legal system and how history, directly and indirectly, has affected the present state of Indigenous and non-Indigenous relations will be addressed.
Learning Outcomes
- develop a rights-based terms of reference in critically analysing government policies towards Indigenous Australians;
- examine the unique nature of Indigenous Legal Issues;
- examine the Western regime and its impact on Indigenous Australians;
- explore the complex social and legal issues facing Indigenous Australians in contemporary Australia;
- explore human rights and social justice and the role of advocacy in promoting Indigenous well- being through law reform.
