Available to Bachelor of Indigenous Studies students and other undergraduate students.
Students will engage in a teacher/learner relationship with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples in order to develop knowledge and understandings which will enable them to develop a deeper understanding of Indigenous Australian communities. The information provided by the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island peoples teaching this subject will enhance the student's capacity to analyze issues from a different cultural perspective within the context of Indigenous lifestyle pre-contact with European people, initial contact and post-contact situations. It is intended that the focus of this subject will be determined by the Indigenous Australians providing the information. This will not only reflect the diversity of the Indigenous Australian experience but will also enable students to gain valuable insights into the dynamic nature of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. As this subject is conducted in relative isolation, students will be encouraged to consider the social construction of the specific learning environment and the power dynamics attached to the way in which they have "positioned" themselves within the group
Learning Outcomes
- examine self world view, cultural values and beliefs and examine these from an Indigenous perspective;
- describe the historical, political, social and cultural frameworks of identified Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island people and communities;
- examine the processes of Indigenous epistemological and ontological perspectives;
- explore the link between historical factors, issues and needs of Indigenous Australians in contemporary society;
- analyse current policies and services and how they are assisting Indigenous Australians in achieving self determination and how Indigenous Australians are positioning themselves in terms of self determination.
