This subject aims to promote understanding of the complexity and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies as evidenced by The Dreaming and oral traditions pre 1788 and proceeds to investigate the history of government policies and practices from European invasion to the 1967 referendum. History is often contested ground. This is so of Indigenous Australian history.
Learning Outcomes
- analyse diversity, complexities and distinctiveness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and worldviews;
- Explore historical and contemporary issues of cultural importance from the perspective and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people;
- Describe the effects of invasion, occupation, resistance and colonisation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
