A brief introduction to the theory and major concepts of linguistics. The study will examine sociolinguistics in relation to Indigenous languages and provide an introductory overview to the phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics of Indigenous languages of Australia. In this subject students will be provided with basic skills to analyse a language linguistically and perceive how languages are interrelated and used.
Learning Outcomes
- analyse both linguistic structures and socio-linguistic features within Indigenous languages;
- recognise the Indigenous languages as an important part of the cultural heritage of the Indigenous Australians;
- critically analyse the complex nature of the Indigenous languages;
- examine the Indigenous language situation and main linguistic features of the Indigenous languages.
