This subject examines the relationship between natural system health and human well-being. In particular, we will first investigate the models and institutional approaches for managing ecosystems, with an emphasis on health indicators, monitoring and evaluation of system trends. Further, the ecosystem services on which human societies depend will be used as examples of linkages across human and ecological systems. These services include nitrogen and carbon cycling, water regulation, waste treatment, pest and disease control, and cultural sustainability. Lectures are complemented by field and lab practicals focused on critical thinking about environmental issues.
