Topics include: Introduction to plates and shells: historical perspective and physical motivation. Plates: classical plate theories including Kirchhoff-Love and Reissner-Mindlin plate theories, finite element modelling, numerical solution of some classical problems. Shells: classical shell theories including the governing equations, membrane shells and shells of revolution, finite element modelling, degenerated shell concept, classical shell theory approach, an overview of finite elements for shells and the numerical solution of some classical problems. Material models for shells: laminated composite shells and elasto-plastic shells. Basics of geometrically non linear shell analysis: rotation, governing equations, numerical procedures, shells in engineering practice including civil structures, aerospace structures and applications in the manufacturing industry.
