Topics include: Elements of tensor algebra: definition and notation for points, vectors and tensor, the spectral theorem, principal invariants and the Cayley-Hamilton theorem. Elements of tensor analysis: differentiation, gradient, divergence, curl, Greenys formulae, the Divergence theorem and Stokeys theorem. Geometry and kinematics of bodies: deformation of bodies, displacement, the Green-Lagrange strain tensor, infinitesimal strain and rotation, properties of the Strain Tensor, normal and shear strains. Balance principles: linear and angular momentum balance, the Stress Tensor, local equations of equilibrium, symmetry of the Stress Tensor, properties of the Stress Tensor, principal and deviatoric stresses and the principal of virtual work. Constitutive theory: the principal of energy balance, the strain energy function, generalised Hookeys law, the Elasticity tensor, isotropic linear elasticity, constitutive equations, Lame coefficients and matrix formulation. The boundary value problems of linear elasticity: a summary of field equations. Introduction to constitutive theory of plasticity.
